It is more work than you think climbing on and off tractors to open and close gates. The automatic drive-through gate is spring loaded so when a tractor or vehicle pushes on it, the gate swings open to let the farmer drive through without climbing off the tractor to open the gate. The springs close the gate once the tractor is through. The automatic drive-through gate is electrified to keep cattle from pushing it open, but green parts of the gate are safe to touch by hand-not electrified. The gates can swing both directions and are adjustable from 13 to 19 feet wide.

Consider the following scenario...Your steers require a round bale before breakfast so you...
WITH AN AUTOMATIC DRIVE-THROUGH GATE...
1. climb on tractor, spear bale, drive to gate
2. drive into pen, dump bale in feeder
3. drive back out, park tractor and go to house while coffee is still hot.
OR WITHOUT...
1. Climb on tractor, spear a bale, drive to gate
2. Jump off tractor and open gate (steers are hungry and standing at gate)
3. leap on tractor and drive like crazy to get in pen before they get out
4. jump off tractor (small steer runs past you) grab gate, slam and chain
5. climb back on tractor, drive to feeder, dump bale
6. drive back to gate
7. jump off tractor and open gate (all steers but one are eating now, other steer enamored by heifers – that band must of fell off)
8. climb up hip-high tractor steps (wife calls and says breakfast is cold and steer in flower bed)
9. drive through gate, climb off, shut gate
10. climb back on, drive to barn,
11. jump off tractor
12. chase steer back into pen (wife calls, lunch is ready).
